August 8, 2017 Market Wrap Up

The markets were on pace for another slow grind up. However, that changed after some political remarks out of the White House, specifically; comments from the President about North Korea and it’s nuclear weapons ambitions.

Earnings highlights included: DIS -2.56%, CVS -0.7%, and CYBR -1.87%

The VIX climbed due to geopolitical concerns, it closed at 10.96.

Index EF movers: SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) -0.25%, iShares Russell 2000 (IWM) -0.31%, SPDR Dow Jones Industrials Average ETF (DIA) -0.07%, and PowerShares QQQ ETF (QQQ) -0.17%

Commodity and futures related ETF movers: United States Oil Fund (USO) -0.4%, iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond (TLT) -0.36%, SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) +0.29%

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Urban Outfitters Inc (URBN), which traded 3.4 times normal option volume. In addition, we saw heavy put buying in Francesca’s Holdings Corporation (FRAN), which traded 7.7 times normal option volume.

August 16, 2016 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 sold off from 52-week highs today on below average trading volume.

Stocks in play today include: The Hain Celestial Group (HAIN) -26%, Meetme (MEET) -16.7%, Stemcells (STEM) +598%, and Resolute Energy (REN) +3%

The VIX closed higher, up over 7% on the day at 12.64.

Crude oil futures continue to ascend higher, now up over 9% over the last three trading sessions. With that said, crude oil futures are are still more than 10% off their 52-week highs.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Reynolds American (RAI) at 4 times normal option volume. In addition, we saw heavy put buying in 8×8 Inc (EGHT) at 23.3 times normal options volume.

This evening we got earnings out of Cree (CREE) -7% and Urban Outfitters (URBN) +8.8%

March 8, 2016 Market Wrap Up

The equity markets declined for the first time in six trading days. With that said, we got some volatility back, with the S&P 500 dropping more than 1% and the VIX closing 7% higher at 18.67.

Oil has been on a tear of late, however; we did see some selling pressure today. The United States Oil Fund (USO) closed the day down more than 4%, at $9.64.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Green Plains (GPRE). In addition, we saw heavy put buying in Unum Group (UNM), which was 4.1 times usual options volume.

Stocks in play included: Ep Energy (EPE) -17%, Seadrill (SDRL) -21%, and Urban Outfitters (URBN) +16%

December 1, 2015 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 was strong all day, closing nearly 1% higher. The SPDR S&P 500 is less than 1% off the 52-week highs and more than 16% higher than the August lows. The market is preparing for potential rate hikes later this month. In addition, there might be some money managers chasing performance before the end of the year.

Stocks in play today included: Cummins (CMI) -7.8%, Acorn International (ATV) +630%, Sunedison (SUNE) +8.5%, and Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) +9.6% to name a few.

The VIX got smoked, closing the day 9% lower at 14.67.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in ADT (ADT). We also saw massive put buyers in Urban Outfitters (URBN), which was down over 5%.

November 30, 2015 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 closed the day relatively weak, as traders came back from Thanksgiving break. With that said, we still finished the month higher. On the other hand, energy, the United States Oil Fund (USO) finished the month down more than 12%. In addition, gold, the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) was down nearly 7% on the month.

There was a decent amount of attention on retail names, stats for Black Friday and Cyber Monday were hitting the tape. Unfortunately, Target (TGT) had issues with their website today, the stock price was down 1.3%. Here’s how other retailers fared: Wal-Mart (WMT) -1.6%, Gap (GPS) -2.3%, Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) -3.8%, and Amazon (AMZN) -1%.

The VIX finished the day a point higher, closing the month at 16.13.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in ADT (ADT). We also saw massive put buyers in Urban Outfitters (URBN), which was down over 5%.

August 3, 2015 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 closed negatively today, causing the index to drop below its 50 and 100 day moving averages. As mentioned yesterday, traders have been focused on China’s market and economic data.

With that said, we saw weaker manufacturing data from them, which caused commodity prices to tumble.

Crude oil futures are now at 3 month lows after dropping nearly 3%. In addition, gold futures are near 12-month lows.

Despite the negative tone, the VIX was only up around 4%, closing at 12.56. Interestingly, Apple saw a pretty sharp sell off, down over 2% and trading below its 200-day moving average for the first time since 2013.
