November 5, 2017 The Week Ahead

Nearly all major indices closed the week higher except for the Russell 2000. Earnings thus far have been good enough. Shares of Apple rose nearly 6% on the week, Alibaba +4.01%, and Starbucks +2.10%, three earnings names that did not disappoint.

Some earnings stocks worth watching for the upcoming week include: CVS, Mylan, Priceline, Macy’s, and Disney.

The “fear index” closed at 9.14 on Friday; as it is now hovering around the 52-week lows of 8.84.

October 29, 2017 The Week Ahead

Nearly all major indices closed the week higher as earnings thus far have been decent. During the week, Amazon, Alphabet and Microsoft all hit all-time highs, as all three impressed the street with its quarterly results.

Some earnings worth watching for the week include: Facebook, Apple, Starbucks, Mastercard, and Alibaba.

The “fear index” closed at 9.80 on Friday; however, it did trade as high as 13 during the week. Outside of earnings, traders will be paying attention to the FOMC, and whether or not they will raise the key interest rate or keep it where it currently is.

January 22, 2017 The Week Ahead

The weekend was highlighted by mass protests across the globe for Women’s March. Whether you’re into politics or not, a new regime was sworn into office on Friday, January 20, 2017. Given the love/hate relationship the new President has with the media, it’s caused him to be very active on social media. With that said, his tweets on specific sectors and stocks has already proven to add volatility. All of this could potentially lead to greater day trading opportunities.

Outside of that, earnings will be one of the key areas traders will be focused on during the week.

Crude oil futures closed up nearly 2%, having three out of four winning days. On the other hand, Gold futures prices finished the week on a two-day winning streak, gaining a shade under 1% on the week.

Now, here is how some of the other closely followed ETFs did on the week: United States Oil Fund (USO) -1.3%, iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond (TLT) -1.60%, SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) +1.0%.

October 30, 2016 The Week Ahead

The S&P 500 finished the week on a four day losing streak. This sets the stage for another busy earnings week along with the November FOMC Meeting. Not to mention, the US Presidential debate coming down the stretch (in less than 2 weeks). On Friday, the markets started to sell off after a report came out that the FBI was going to reopen an investigation on Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton.

The VIX has surged more than 20% since the previous Friday’s close and is now above 16.

Crude oil futures price sold off more than 4% on the week, closing below $50 and now roughly 6% off the 52-week highs. Moving on, gold futures prices rose .78% and T-Bond futures prices sold off more than 1.5% on the week.

Earnings will be heavy again, some key names to watch include: Gilead Sciences, Qualcomm, Starbucks, and Time Warner Cable.

April 17, 2016 The Week Ahead

The S&P 500 finished the week higher, actually near 3-month highs as earnings season picks up steam. On the menu this week: Microsoft, Netflix, Johnson & Johnson, American Express, Alphabet, Starbucks, and McDonalds just to name a few.

The VIX closed the week nearly two points lower from last Friday, at 13.62.

Crude oil finished the week slightly higher, however; it’s seeing heavy selling pressure Sunday night after OPEC’s Meeting this weekend. When countries came together this weekend, they were unable to come up with any form of resolution on a potential production freeze. With that said, Iran decided not to freeze output causing a standoff amongst members.

October 25, 2015 The Week Ahead

The S&P 500 continued its hot streak, closing the week up more than 2%. In fact, the SPDR S&P 500 (SPY) is up more than 7% on the month. Not only that, but we’re about 15% of this year’s lows.

The NASDAQ also got a giant boost after getting good earnings out of the likes of Microsoft, Amazon, and Google.

With that said, the VIX is below 15, a signal that there isn’t much fear in the market at the moment.

The United States Oil Fund (USO) was down more than 6% on the week. We continue to see a dislocation from the equity market and the energy market.

This is an extremely busy week in regards to earnings and economic data. Key economic information that will be released includes GDP and an FOMC meeting announcement.

On the earnings front we’ll see releases out of the likes of Apple, Starbucks, Twitter, GoPro, Exxon, and Pfizer to name a few.
