October 26, 2016 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 closed relatively flat today in what is one of the busiest earnings week of the year. Last night we heard from Apple, which disappointed by posting its third straight quarter of declining iPhone sales. This put a damper on the Nasdaq composite today as it dropped about .7%.

In the after hours we got earnings out of Tesla Motors (TSLA), which is up more than 6% at the time of this writing. This morning we got earnings out Biogen (BIIB), which is a gain of nearly 4%.

Stocks in play today included: Edwards Lifesciences (EW) -17%, Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) -9%, NCR +14.5%, and Akamai Technologies (AKAM) +14.6%

The VIX sold rose nearly 6%, closing at 14.24.

Crude oil futures prices sold off for the third straight day, and is now down more than 3% on the week.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in SolarCity (SCTY), which traded 2.1 times normal option volume. In addition, we saw heavy put buying in Western Union Company (WU), which saw 9.8 times normal options volume.

September 7, 2016 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 closed relatively unchanged on above average volume. All eyes will be on the ECB tomorrow as domestically there isn’t much on the schedule this week. With that said, there is a ton of stuff scheduled for later this month. This includes an OPEC meeting, FOMC meeting, and the first presidential debate between Hillary and Donald.

Stocks in play today included: GW Pharmaceuticals (GWPH) +21.7%, J.C. Penney (JCP) +5.9%, Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) +5.9%, and Sprouts Farmers Markets (SFM) -13.7%

The VIX didn’t move much, closing below 12, at 11.94.

Crude oil futures prices caught a bid today, and is now on a three-day winning streak. Over that period, crude futures have been up nearly 6%.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Sally Beauty Holdings (SBH), which traded 10.4 times normal option volume. In addition, we saw heavy put buying in Sonic Corporation (SONC), which was 5 times normal options volume.

July 21, 2016 Market Wrap Up | TVC Trading Education Courses

The S&P 500 closed slightly lower today as we treasuries and gold catch a bid. In addition, the Dow Jones Industrials snapped its nine day winning streak. Early in the morning there were two deals announced. First, Komatsu made a bid to buy Joy Global (JOY) for $2.9 billion. The second was in the biotech space; Galencia made a bid to buy Relypsa (RLYP) for $1.53 billion.

Stocks in play today include: Ocean Power Technologies (OPTT) -32%, Kingtone Wirelessinfo (KONE) +325%, Southwest Airlines (LUV) -11%, and Humana (HUM) +8%.

The VIX finally caught a bid today, closing 8% higher at 12.74.

Crude oil futures dropped about 2%, closing below $45 per barrel.

This evening we got earnings out of Paypal Holdings (PYPL) +1.9%, Starbucks (SBUX) -3.2%, Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) -1.7%, and Proofpoint (PFPT) +4.8%

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Jazz Pharmaceuticals (JAZZ), which traded 14.2 times normal volume. We also saw a ton of bearish bets being placed in Zafgen (ZFGN), which traded 9.6 times usual volume.

April 26, 2016 Market Wrap Up

The market was relatively flat today, ahead of a heavy earnings and data week. The S&P 500 closed the day at 2091.70.

This evening we got results out of Twitter (TWTR) -9.3%, Apple (AAPL) -8.5%, and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) -2.3%.

Overall, this should have a negative effect on the market. However, we’ve got the FOMC announcement which has the potential to shift the markets in either direction.

The VIX caught a bid, closing the day at 13.96.

Crude Oil has had a nice bounce today, climbing in the after hours after seeing a draw in the API data. We’re now trading above $44 a barrel.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Huntington Bancshares Inc (HBAN). In addition, we saw heavy put buying in ExamWorks Group (EXAM), which saw 7.4 times usual options volume.

Stocks in play included: Sarepta (SRPT) -31%, Amira Nature Foods (ANFI) -16.6%, and Valeant Pharmaceuticals +2.2%.

February 2, 2016 Market Wrap Up

Just when you thought that the volatility was going to cool off, things started heating up again. The S&P 500 lost nearly 2% as most stocks sold off fairly hard. We’re just 5% off our most recent lows.

Adding fuel to the fire, we saw massive sell-off in crude oil prices. In the last two days, crude oil prices are down more than 11%, and trading below $30 per barrel. We’re just a little more than 5% off from the most recent lows.

Given the volatility, it wasn’t a real shock to see the VIX above 20, closing at 21.89 to be exact.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Yahoo (YHOO). In addition, we saw heavy put buying in Activision Blizzard (ATVI).

In the after hours we got earnings results out of Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). The stock was down nearly 7% in the after hours.

January 31, 2016 The Week Ahead

The S&P 500 had its second straight positive week. It was a rough month for indices, with some of them seeing their worst monthly declines in over five years. Volatility may come in as the Chinese market will be on break to celebrate their new year, which happens in less than two weeks.

If you recall, weakness in the Asian markets was causing the heavy selling in January. Not to mention weakness in oil prices.

The VIX waited till Friday to sell-off hard. Overall, it closed lower, right above 20.

Crude oil prices are more than 10% higher than their monthly lows. Gaining more than 5% on the week and closing above $33 per barrel. Is it a dead-cat bounce or have prices finally started to stabilize?

January 14, 2016 Market Wrap Up

In 2016, volatility is the name of the game. With that said, it was out in full force today. The S&P 500 traded in a range of 1878 to about 1934. Ultimately closing the day about 1.67% higher. Believe it or not, we’re nearly flat on the week now.

The VIX continues to stay elevated above 20, however; today it was down 5%, closing at 23.95.

Crude oil futures prices continue to hover around $30 per barrel. Lately, the equity markets have been selling off when energy does. Let’s see if that theme continues.

Stocks in play included: Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) +6.2%, Solarcity (SCTY) -13.5%, and Abbvie (ABBV) +6.7%.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Abbvie (ABBV). We also saw aggressive put buying in Workday (WDAY) .

October 20, 2015 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 was nearly flat today, closing the day down less than half of a percent. The SPDR S&P (SPY) is now up more than 4% on the month.

Earnings thus far have been average at best. We’ve seen some poor results from the likes of NFLX, IBM, WMT, and MS to name a few.

Interestingly, the VIX spiked 5% today, now trading at 15.75.

The energy sector was relatively flat; however, the United States Oil Fund (USO) has been dislocating from the equity markets. It’s clearly lost some steam while the equity markets keep moving higher.

On the options front, we saw bullish call buying in Heron Therapeutics (HRTX). Options that saw bearish put buying in Twenty First Century Fox Inc (FOX).

This evening we got earnings from Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) -3%, Yahoo! (YHOO) -3%, and Cree (CREE) -1.4%
